DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a potent, naturally occurring psychedelic found in plants, animals, and even in trace amounts within the human body. It’s known for inducing intensed, short-lived altered states of consciousness.
Uses
Historically, DMT has been used in spiritual and ritualistic contexts, particularly as part of ayahuasca in Amazonian traditions. Research is currently exploring its potential therapeutic benefits for conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, especially treatment-resistant depression.
Effects
DMT rapidly binds to serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to profound visual and auditory hallucinations, altered perceptions of time and space, and sometimes experiences of ego dissolution or encounters with “entities”. Effects typically last 5-30 minutes when smoked or vaporized, but can extend for hours in ayahuasca. While not considered physically addictive, it can cause increased heart rate, blood pressure, and psychological distress, especially for individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions.
